HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN SEED BOMBS

900 600 Suburban Farmer

First off, what is a SEED BOMB? Aren’t bombs dangerous to LIFE?

Seed bombs are an awesome and upful, effective way of re-seeding depleted landscapes where you want to reintroduce plants to an area, whether it’s reestablishing NATIVES or FLOWER BOMBING for beauty. Being extremely careful not to add invasive or threatening species.  These bombs CREATE LIFE.

Seed bombs are usually small balls made of clay, potting soil, compost and of course seeds. Once they have been made and dried for 24-48 hours – they are “thrown” across land and areas which needs new floral assistance. Be careful not to disobey laws or get caught really. Be extra careful not to disobey NATURAL LAW and ECOSYSTEM.

What sort of seeds should you choose ?

You should choose seeds of varieties of plants or trees that are native to the region where you are going to carry out your seed-bombing activity, so that they are more likely to survive and not compete with endemic species. You can choose trees as well as plants – for foliage, flowers, habitat, herbal healing.

When is a good time for seed-bombing ?

The best average time I have found to go BOMBING is towards the end of the rainy season/Winter. So that the seeds get watered but do not drown and wash away in heavy rains.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR SEED BOMBS:

Here’s what you need:

  • 2 parts potting soil or compost
  • 5 parts ROCK CLAY or some RIVER BED CLAY/DAM CLAY
  • 1-2 parts water
  • 1-2 parts seeds of your choice
  • a bucket to mix ingredients
  • a cardboard box or somewhere to dry and store seed balls out of the extreme weather and direct sun

HERES’ HOW TO PREPARE THEM:

  1. Mix the potting soil, clay and 1 part water thoroughly. Make sure there are no lumps, DO THIS SLOWLY. Get the youth involved!!
  2. Slowly add more water until the mixture is the consistency of play dough
  3. Add your bespoke seed mix. Keep kneading the dough until the seeds are well mixed in, be gentle not to crush or damage your seeds unless they need scarification. Add more water if necessary.
  4. Take small bits of the clay mixture and roll into ball about one inch in diameter.
The balls should hold together easily. If they’re crumbly, add more water. Do not over compress or under compress. Balance 😊
  5. Dry your seed balls for 24-48 hours in a shaded place before sowing or storing. They store best in a cardboard box. Do not use plastic bags as they will rot due to the residual water in the mix and seeds.

Your seed bombs are now ready (after curing properly). Grab some friends and family, youth and pets and go for a drive. REMEMBERING TO BE VIGILANT AND CAREFUL WITH ECOLOGICAL BALANCE.   DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE DOING THIS. DO NOT GET CAUGHT 😊
